When I visited Bierry-les-Belles-Fontaines in September 2020 I met Maurice Rousselet, a local historian, who still recalled vividly the June day in 1940 when the Germans entered his village and installed themselves in the Château d’Anstrude (GPS 47.595655, 4.183585). In 1944 he was a farmhand, and he recalled finishing a long day in the fields on 23 August to learn from an excited villager that the English ‘in funny little vehicles’ were fighting the Germans in Villaines-les-Prévôtes.
